Tamko Ridge Vent Installation: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Tamko-compatible ridge vent systems throughout Long Beach, with most full ridge vent replacements running between $850 and $1,400 installed on a typical single-story ranch. We carry Tamko’s 4-foot plastic mesh ridge vent sections and the matching outside closure strips on our trucks, so most jobs are done same day once we confirm the existing vent profile. The usual call starts the same way: a homeowner finds plastic fragments in the gutter after a Santa Ana wind event, or notices the ridge cap shingles lifting along the peak.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko makes two ridge vent lines that show up on Long Beach roofs: the Tamko Metal-Aire (their aluminum baffle vent) and the Tamko 12-Inch Plastic Mesh Ridge Vent. The plastic mesh version is the one we replace most often on homes from the 2000s onward, particularly in planned communities around East Long Beach where builders used Tamko shingles with the matching accessory line. Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see regularly: the 12-inch plastic mesh does not seal correctly against a vent slot cut wider than 2 inches. If a previous roofer cut the slot too wide, the outside edges of the vent don’t sit on solid decking, and you get leaks at the peak even with the closure strips correctly installed. We measure the actual slot width before recommending anything.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Tamko specifically: Tamko’s plastic mesh vent is an open-roll design that is functionally interchangeable with most quality 12-inch mesh vents, but the outside closure strips are the piece worth matching. Tamko’s closure strip has a specific profile that mates with their vent’s edge geometry. Generic closure strips sometimes leave a hairline gap that lets wind-driven rain under the cap shingles. We stock Tamko’s matching closure strips because the $40 difference on a $1,200 job is not where anyone should be cutting corners.

Signs Your Tamko Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

Ridge vents fail quietly most of the time, and by the time water shows up on the ceiling the peak has usually been leaking for a season. These are the five things we see on Long Beach roofs before a full failure:

  • Plastic fragments in gutters or at downspout elbows. UV exposure breaks down Tamko’s plastic mesh after 12 to 18 years here. The plastic gets brittle, and the first pieces to break off wash down the roof and end up in the gutter. This is the most common early sign.
  • Ridge cap shingles lifting or curling at the peak. The cap shingles are nailed through the vent’s nailing flange. When the plastic mesh underneath degrades and flattens, the cap shingles lose their supporting surface and start working loose.
  • Dark staining on the ridge cap shingles. When the vent is no longer moving air properly, heat and moisture build up at the peak. Algae and mildew take hold on the ridge line before anywhere else on the roof.
  • Attic temperatures climbing in summer. A working Tamko ridge vent pulls hot air continuously along the peak. When it collapses or clogs, the attic can run 20 to 30 degrees hotter, which pushes cooling costs up and bakes the underside of your shingles.
  • Water staining on bathroom or hallway ceilings near the centerline of the house. This usually means the ridge slot is leaking, often because the original install used an undersized vent or the closure strips have separated. Not every ridge leak is a full vent failure, but it always needs a look.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-family home in Long Beach, a complete Tamko ridge vent replacement runs $850 to $1,400 installed. The range moves on three things: roof slope and access, total linear feet of ridge, and whether the existing cap shingles can be reused or need replacing. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • Materials: $180 to $320 for 20 to 35 linear feet of Tamko mesh vent plus matching closure strips. We quote the exact material count from measurements, not guesses.
  • Labor: $500 to $850 depending on the roof’s pitch and how many helpers we need on the peak. A 6/12 or steeper roof adds time and cost because every step needs tie-off.
  • Cap shingle replacement: $120 to $250 if the existing caps are cracked, stripped, or too brittle to reset. We match existing Tamko cap shingles where possible.

Every quote is written, line-itemed, and delivered before any work starts. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. And every ridge vent replacement is covered by our written 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge, including a free second visit if that’s what it takes.

DIY or Call Us?

This is roof work at the highest point of the house, and the hazard is real. Falls from a roof peak are life-changing, and ridge vent work means kneeling at the edge of a slope while handling shingles and nails. We’d always rather talk you out of doing this yourself. What you can do from the ground: check your gutters for plastic mesh fragments, look for lifted or cracked ridge cap shingles, and note attic temperature changes. What you shouldn’t do: get on the roof to investigate. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, Dylan Pace and our crew will come out, get on the roof, and take photos so you can see exactly what’s going on. Call (562) 471-4832 and we’ll schedule a written estimate.
